Updated: Aug 28, 2023

My hoya bloomed! Here are my best hoya care tips and tricks. I’ll be describing more about the process and the conditions that made my Hoya bloom in this video.

1. Age

From my experience, the age of your hoya plant is very important. It takes a mature hoya to bloom and it usually takes 3-4 years for a Hoya to mature. But don't be discouraged if you just bought your plant. Plant shops are most likely selling cuttings of mature plants. It only took a year for my Hoya to bloom!

2. Pot Size

The smaller the pot, the better! Hoyas don't mind being root bound. The stress from being root bound encourages them to flower. You can even keep them in the same pot for years.

3. Lighting Condition

Hoyas thrive in bright indirect light. I have most of my hoya plant collection in my south-facing window (the brightest windows in my house). The stress from in strong lighting conditions also encourages them to flower.

4. Watering Schedule

Allow your Hoya indoor plants dry out in between watering. Soak the soil thoroughly until the water drains out of the drainage holes.

5. Orchid Mist (My secret weapon)

Like Orchid, Hoyas are epiphyte that absorb nutrients through leaves, stems and roots. The Miracle-Gro Orchid Plant Food Mist makes a really nice fertilizer. It is $7.84 at Amazon for a pack of 2 and it has really good ratings. The easy-to-use spray nozzle application for the orchid mist is the perfect way to give the Hoya's nutrients needed to produce flowers.

I've seen a significant difference in my Hoyas after using this product. Not only do they grow more leaves but also produce their first flowers! All I do is mist the roots, leaves and soil once a week.

A Hoya Newbie?

If you can't decide what hoya plant, I highly recommend that you add a Hoya Obovata in your plant collection!! It's my favorite hoya because of their cookie shaped leaves. Not only are they low maintenance but they also bloom frequently. Mine bloomed 4 times just this summer!!

You can click here to get a mature Hoya Obovata Splash from California Tropicals, they are only $18.99 on Amazon which is a real steal of a deal! (That's where I got my obovata too)
